San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the country, and its local search behaves the way a big, concentrated core tends to: the city term does most of the work. This is close to the opposite of a polycentric metro. San Antonio and Bexar County dominate, and the outlying demand does not spread across a deep suburban tier. It collects instead in a couple of genuinely separate small cities along the I-35 corridor and out in the Hill Country. The metro reads as one dominant core with a short list of standalone satellites, not a ring of large peer suburbs.

The observations here come from running local campaigns in markets shaped like this one. We use HVAC as the sample service below because it exists wherever there are houses, and in South Texas it matters year-round. San Antonio runs one of the longest cooling seasons in the country, with a stretch of triple-digit summer days that turns air conditioning from a comfort item into an emergency-repair category. That makes the cross-area variation a read on search behavior rather than something specific to one trade. The same shape holds for roofing and plumbing at different absolute numbers.

San Antonio as the city covers downtown, the near neighborhoods, the North Side, the South Side, and the large swath of Bexar County that identifies directly with the city. Greater San Antonio stretches across Bexar and into the neighboring counties, Comal and Guadalupe among them. “Alamo City” and “SATX” show up culturally, but they are not commercial search terms the way the city name is.

A keyword tool reports “San Antonio HVAC” as one line, and in this metro that one line genuinely carries the bulk of the demand. The distinction that matters here is not a suburban tier. It is which outlying towns are separate enough, by geography and civic identity, to search as their own markets rather than folding into the city term.

The markets that actually carry volume

San Antonio carries the overwhelming majority, and the gap to everything else is wide. New Braunfels, up I-35 toward Austin in Comal County, is the clearest standalone market: a growing city with its own downtown, its own economy, and real search of its own. Boerne, out in the Hill Country to the northwest, is the second genuine satellite, smaller but distinct. Schertz and Cibolo, the northeast suburbs along the Guadalupe County line, register lighter standalone search, and Seguin, further east, sits in the same tier.

The finding is a dominant core rather than a distributed metro. San Antonio runs more than eight times the next-largest market, which is the signature of a concentrated city where the suburbs read as part of the whole rather than as peer markets. New Braunfels is the exception worth treating seriously: at 150 a month it is a genuine standalone market, not a San Antonio neighborhood. On top of the city term, “roofers san antonio” runs about 500 a month and “roof repair san antonio” about 800, which confirms how much weight the core term carries here across trades. The practical takeaway: win San Antonio decisively first, then justify a real New Braunfels page and a lighter Boerne page, while Schertz, Cibolo, and Seguin are best served by the city term and the map pack until a business has a real presence in them.

What this means for local SEO in San Antonio

Win the metro term and the map pack first, and do not underweight it. In a core-concentrated market this is where almost all the demand lives. “San Antonio [service]” and “[service] near me” carry the bulk of it, and a clean, well-reviewed Google Business Profile does the heavy lifting.

Build a real New Braunfels page, and be selective past that. New Braunfels earns a genuine, locally specific page because it searches as its own city. Boerne can support a lighter one. The mistake here is spinning up a dozen thin suburb pages that the search volume does not support. This is not Detroit; the tier is short.

Lean into the heat. San Antonio’s cooling season is long and brutal, and the demand pattern reflects it. Air conditioning repair, replacement, and emergency response match real seasonal search and convert, and the July intent is where the spike lives. The same page reads very differently in August than in February, and August is when the volume shows up.
